Happy Memorial Day Pappa

Fred A. Datig Jr. driving the Jeep
My father, Fred A. Datig Jr., a veteran of the Korean War and World War II, was an armored infantryman and a scout-observer in the European Theatere of Operations of Italy, France and Germany, where his unit liberated the concentration camps of Dachau. He was awarded the coveted Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, the European-African-Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal with four Campaign Stars, the French Croix de Guerre and he was a Chevalier (Knight) of the French Legion of Honor. He also served with the ordinance Department at Aberdeen Providing Ground where he was associated with the Foreign Material Branch and was understudy to that Unit’s commanding Officer. He was retired from the Army in 1950 after having spent one and a half years in Army hospitals from being hit by shrapnel and of getting frozen feet.
